Baptismal Preparation

The baptism of your baby is a special event to share with family and friends. However it is important to remember that Baptism is a celebration of the presence of God within us as your baby becomes a child of God and a new member of the church. It is you who are taking on the responsibility of accepting baptism for your child and you who promises to nurture the new life of grace that your child receives.

How will you know if you are ready to have your children baptised?

  • If you desire to have your child, become a member of God’s family.
  • If you yourself want to grow in your knowledge of baptism.
  • If , as in the Rite of Baptism , you are willing to accept the responsibility of training your children ‘in the practice of the faith , by bringing them up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us by loving God and our neighbour.’

Practical Steps

Contact the parish secretary six weeks before you would like your baby to be baptised. Please do not make family arrangements until the date has been confirmed. The secretary will give you a leaflet and a questionnaire to read together.

Make an appointment to meet with a priest. Further details will be taken and your questionnaire discussed. A book called, ’Your Baby’s Baptism’ will be provided and you will be asked to read it before attending a Baptism Preparation Evening. These meetings are usually the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Monastery Library.

To apply: Obtain a leaflet from the parish office.
